On October 29, CJMD Co-Director Adrienne Russell and Stephanie Hankey of Berlin-based Tactical Tech launched What on Earth?, a new series of public events and essays exploring the relationship between digital technologies and environmental change.
In collaboration with Spore Initiative and Tactical Tech, the series brings together researchers, artists, activists, and practitioners to examine the social and environmental consequences of technological expansion and explore alternatives. Topics range from AI’s growing energy and resource demands to information pollution, hyperconsumption, extraction, surveillance, repair, and regeneration.
Alongside the events, Russell and Hankey are co-authoring a series of essays that will form the basis of a forthcoming book. Together, the essays and events challenge dominant narratives of technological progress and explore more just and sustainable futures.
The series will run over the next two years, with events in Berlin and recordings and essays available online. We’ll post them all here as they become available.
